Sthalapuranam:

According to the legend, when Shukra Acharya, the tutor and guide for the Asuras, brought the dead asuras back to life in their war against the devas, Guru or Jupiter’s son, Kasa, was sent on behalf of the Devas to Asuralokha to learn Sanjeevini Mantra that Shukra Acharya used to bring the Asuras back to life. While Shukra Acharya’s daughter Devayani fell in love with Kasa, the demons sensed Kasa’s intentions and killed him, mixing his ashes in water and making Shukra Acharya drink it. Shukra Acharya was able to find this out of his wisdom when Devayani requested him to find out where Kasa was. Kasa was brought back to life by Shukra, but he had to tear open Shukra Acharya’s stomach in the process – he later saved his acharya by using the Sanjeevini Mantra that he had learnt. Now that he also came out of the acharya, he had become his son, and hence, refused to marry Devayani. When Devayani raised seven mountains and prevented Kasa from leaving, Lord Chakrathaazhwar was sent to his rescue on Chithirai day by Lord Narayana as Jupiter prayed for his safety. Since the Lord appeared in his chariot or Radha, the God is known as Chithiraradha Perumal.

We observe Guru transition day each year very devotionally when the planet moves to the next zodiac sign.  Guru-Jupiter himself had to face a problem and Lord Narayana was the destination for him for a remedy.   He performed penance here. He is a swayambumurthy here.  Chakkarathalwar (Lord Narayana’s discus) also is a swayambumurthy in the temple. The idols of 12 Alwars (sage poets who eulogized Perumal) are in a single form.

Guru Bhagwan (Jupiter) and Chakarathalwar (the discus of Lord Vishnu) grace as swayambumurthis. The idols of Perumal with His consorts are made of sandalwood, a salient feature of the temple. Jupiter graces as Yoga Guru. Margazhi Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January and Jupiter transition days are celebrated in the temple.

Sthalapuranam:

The presiding deity, Hari Theertheswarar, is a Swayambu Lingam – the Lord in the form of Linga is known to have appeared on His own in this temple. The temple’s history dates back to the era of the Chola King Kalmashapadan, who longed for the birth of a child for years after marriage. He was advised by Sage Agasthiya to visit Thiruvarankulam and pay homage to Lord Shiva. However, when the king visited the temple, there was no Shiva Linga there, which made him enquire in the village. When he learnt that people who carried Pooja materials tended to trip down and fall at a particular place, he started digging there, only to find the land bleeding at the spot, and Shiva Linga emerging from the earth. The king was very upset at having caused injury to the Lord and he wished to die. However, Lord Shiva appeared with Devi Parvathi and blessed him. This led to the building of the temple at the place and consecration of the temple on the day of Pooram Nakshatra. He was also gifted with a male child. There was a golden palm tree on the outer corridor of the temple yielding golden fruits.  It is said that the temple was built with the sale proceeds of the golden fruit.  Now, the tree is not there.  There is a pillar now.  The temple was built before the 12th century and renovated by Cholas and Pandyas.  As the holy spring came from the head of Hara, it is called Hara theertham.  The place came to be known as Tiru Haran Kulam-Tiruvarnkulam.  Hara-Shiva.

Lord Hari Theertheswarar is worshipped as the family deity of people residing in places around 150 kilo meter of the temple.  Mother Perianayaki graces with four hands facing south.  It is said that Mother Goddess was born to one belonging to Kattudayan Chettiar lineage.  Based on this belief, women of this community regard Lord Shiva as their son-in-law and worship Him covering their head with Sari – Mukkadu. Poora Theertham is a spring in the world of Agni.  There are Shiva theertha, Naga theertha, Gnanabrahmma theertha, Indira theertha, Sri theertha, Skanda theertha and Guru theertha – seven theerthas in the Poora star region.  The temple is dedicated to Pooram star.  Those born in this star are advised to visit the temple as often as they could, on their annual star day, monthly star days, wedding days and Aadi Pooram day.

Aadi Pooram-Amman Tirukalyanam (wedding) in July-August, Maha Shivrathri in February-March, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Tirukarthikai in November-December and Vaikasi Visakam in May-June are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

Your regard for your parents remains unwavering. You will keep your surroundings simple and your thoughts noble. You love tradition and formality. You are helpful to those in need. You are considered honest and decent. Because of your honesty and straight-forwardness, you are annoyed by dishonesty in any form. Your independence, impartiality and determination may cause displeasure to many. You are advised to be tolerant of those less principled than you.

Sthalapuranam:

On his way to Ayodhya from Lanka with Mother Sita and Lakshmana, Sri Rama relaxed in the hermitage of Sage Bharadwaha.  While taking food there, Sri Rama drew a line across the leaf to share it with Sri Anjaneya to acknowledge all the services he rendered during his difficult days in search of Mother Sita and in the battle against Ravana.  Both dined on the same leaf sitting opposite to each other. It is said that since the event, plantain leaves began to grow with this partition line.  Sage Bharadwaja, whose reputation is beyond words, worshipped in this temple.  Also, the sage is one of the five sages who installed Mother Meenakshi inMadurai.

His reputation is beyond the power of words.  Despite high power gained through intense penance, the sage was all humble in nature.  The two peetas at the entrance of the temple are said to be Bharadwaja himself sitting there to have the touch of the feet of devotees on his head.  Born in the Magam Star, special pujas are performed in his favour on this day.  It is believed that many noble souls and sages partake in the pujas invisibly.  It is advised that those born in Magam star should take Sage Bharadwaja as their Guru and worship Lord Shiva with abisheks and archanas on Magam star days, Pachami, Sashti, Ekadasi, Dwadasi, Pradosham and monthly Shivrathri days to sustain a happy and prosperous life.

Presiding deity, Lord Mahalingeswarar graces facing east. In the shrine, right to Him, there are two goddess named after Meenakshi in Madurai. They are close to the wall facing south. The devotee has to peep closely into the shrine to have their darshan. They represent two powers – Icha Shakti and Gnana Shakti. Worshipping them would benefit the devotee with wisdom to know God.

As Maharshi Bharadwaja performed penance sitting on a platform with concentration on the Lord controlling all his senses, the place is known as Odukkam Thavasi Medai. Odukkam-controlling the senses; Thavasi-one performing penance and Medai-platform.

Aadhi Bhairava: Bhairava shrine is generally on the northeast corner in the temple. Here, He is just opposite Lord Shiva. As Lord Mahalineswara is all powerful, it is said that to protect the devotees from the scorching heat (Ugra), Bhairava is installed here balancing the temperature. Bhairava here is known as Aadhi Bhairava. There is a hole behind the Bhairava through which the devotees worship Lord Shiva and Bhairava before entering the temple.

Following Shivarathri, the rays of Sun God continuously fall on the Lord for thirty days during mornings and on Bhairava during the evenings. Special pujas are performed on Magam star days remembering Maharshi Bharadwaja’s birth star.

Uthiram – Sri Mangalyeswarar temple

Name of the Temple

Sri Mangalyeswarar temple

Period of origin

Before 2000 years

Name of deity

Moolavar: Mangalyeswarar

Ambal: Mangalambikai

Sthala Theertham: kooba kinaru

Sthala Virksham: Pavalamalli

Star : Uthiram

Male:

Even as a boy, you understand the realities of life. You therefore develop a mature outlook comparatively early. You are careful to present your family in the best light possible. You will experience a mixture of good and bad luck. However, you will progress steadily in the field in which you participate. You will make decisions after careful thought and with the advice of those you trust. You will not be excessively demonstrative or affectionate. Your life is organized and systematic. You are careful and deliberate in your speech and mannerisms. Your great regard for the well being of others may serve to ruin your own chances for getting ahead. Try to maintain a mental equilibrium. This is especially true since you find it hard to deal harshly with others. The barriers to a life may be caused by the ill health of your wife, or the actions of your children.

Female:

You are primarily a self made individual, though you do not lack a network of friends and family who look to your interests. You enjoy travel and various modes of transportation. You may decide to settle down in a place far from the town in which you were born. As a child you may face a lot of seemingly insurmountable difficulties, but adulthood will provide you with the strength and the tools to overcome many of your problems. You have a purity of intent and a genuineness of purpose that is clear even to those who come to your attention. You are generally self- disciplined and believe in the necessity of law and order. You are pleasant and optimistic. You rarely get disheartened. You will do well by tenacious dedication to a profession. You consult others before making important decisions. Be more dynamic and forceful. You have a tendency to allow others, especially men, to take advantage of you. Don’t let your gentle heart cause you to become involved in relationships and situations that you may regret later.

Sthalapuranam:

The temple derives its name from Sage Mangalya, who is known to be involved in the weddings of Sage Agasthya, Sage Vasishta, and Bhairava. The legend has it that the powers of Sage Mangalya reside in his fore palm – the reason why elders bless others with their raised fore-palms. Sage Mangalya is known to bless wedded couples with Akshadas, or grains of rice that have been coated with the holy turmeric. When newlywed couples are blessed so, Akshada angels are known to bless the couples; this is the belief that is reflected in wedding cards and invitations featuring the angels to be blessing the couples. It is believed that during weddings, Sage Mangalya blesses the couples and prays for them invisibly.

This is the choice temple for the Uthiram starrers.  They must take all opportunities to visit and pray in the temple at least on their annual star day.  Those having problems in feet, the aged longing to join their sons again in life who once drove them away and women seeking longevity of their husbands choose this temple to realize their wishes. Besides Uthiram starrers worshipping for relief from adversities they face due to planetary movements, others mainly are seeking wedding boons and family unity. Devotees pray for relief from leg pains.  Women of Uthiram star pray for the longevity of their husbands.  The aged, driven out by sons pray for safe return to homes. Soon after a wedding alliance is settled, the parties, after praying in their own family deity temples, come here to pray to Mangalya Marshi, place the invitation in his shrine and pray for his blessing for smooth procedure of the function till the end. After marriage, the couples come and pray to Lord gratefully. Any obstacle in the wedding proposals vanishes if the blessing of Lord is sought, according to faith.

Panguni Uthiram in March-April is grandly celebrated in the temple. Vinayak Chaturthi in August-September, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Tirukarthikai in October-November and Navarthri in September-October are other festivals of the temple.

Panguni Uthiram is a day of importance to Tamil Hindus. It falls on the day the moon transits in the asterism or nakshatram of Uttara-phalguni or Uthiram in the twelfth month of the Tamil solar calendar i.e. Panguni (March–April). It is the full moon of the month of Panguni.

This month is special because the Uthiram nakshatram coincides with the full moon. This full moon signifies the marriage of Parvati and Parameswara (Lord Shiva), Murugan and Deivanai, and Aandaal (also known as Kothai) and Rangamannar took place. On Panguni Uthiram, Narayana marries Kamalavalli Naachiyar and give his Kalyana Kola Seva to his Bhakthas. Again, Valmiki’s Ramayana says it is on this day and star that Sita’s marriage with Rama was celebrated. From Brahmanda Puranam we learn that on Panguni Uthiram every holy water joins Thumburu teertha (also spelt as Tirtha), one of seven sacred tanks in Tirupati Tirumala.

The day is intended to underline the glory of grahasta dharma (or the married life of a householder). The Almighty manifests in the marital state as Uma Maheswara, Sita Rama, and Radha Krishna – despite his changelessness, sans childhood or youth or old age. The Lord is indeed a Nitya Kalyana Murthi. It is our duty to celebrate this day when the Lord, in both Shiva and Vishnu temples, appears to devotees in his married state. On Panguni Uthiram, in all places where Lord Subrahmanya has a temple, his devotees carry in a kavadi the requisites for puja for him, in fulfilment of vows. Such vow fulfilment by devotees carrying kavadis is a special feature of Subrahmanya temples wherever they happen to be. Panguni Uthiram is a famous festival and special to Murugan devotees.

The festival is also associated with various rituals. For instance, devotees carry a kavadi (semicircular canopy supported by a wooden rod that is carried on shoulders), milk pots or pull a chariot in fulfilment of vows. A special feature is the alagu, where devotees pierce the body with spears and hooks as an offering to the Lord for having helped them to avert a calamity. Devotees flock in hundreds to the all Murugan temples during the Panguni Uthiram festival, which is celebrated in March every year. It is the Jayanti (Day of Incarnation) of Lord Ayyappan. It is also an important festival day for Lord Subramanya (Muruga), as it is on this day that Sri Deivanai married Lord Subramanya. On this day Goddess Mahalakshmi incarnated on earth from the ocean of milk (after the ocean was churned by the Gods and the demons) and hence it is celebrated as Mahalakshmi Jayanti. On this day Goddess Parvati in the form of Gowri married Lord Siva in Kanchipuram and hence this day is also celebrated as the Gowri Kalyanam day.

People may consider you self centered. You have to work to convince others of the genuineness of your nature. Do not settle for a relationship in which you are not fully appreciated.

Sthalapuranam:

The place is closely associated with Planet Saturn.  His son, Yama the God of Death hit Him on His leg and was lamed.  Saturn began a pilgrimage to all Shiva temples for remedy.  When He came here, he fell down struck by the roots of Vila tree.  It was a Saturday (Sani’s own day) combined with Poosam star and Akshaya Thrithiya indicating prosperity.  As He fell, the spring Poosa Gnanavavi, hidden till then, rose with force and took Him up.  Lord Akshaya Pureeswara granted darshan to Him and blessed Sani with wedding.  His leg became straight.

Combined with the names of Vila tree and the Gnanavari spring, the place came to be known as Vilankulam.  Kulam-spring.  A Siddha, Poosa Marungar by name, living in Saneeswara Loka (world), used to spill the Sanivari theertha on the springs of Shiva temples.  Saneeswara has importance in such temples.  The Siddha has a rare power of visiting the world of Sun and the world of the Pithrus (departed ancestors) and is the Guru of the crows.  It is believed that the Siddha is visiting the temple for worship daily.

The adage goes that Poosa Padan brings friendship.  Padan denotes Saturn.  When his leg was affected, Saturn worshipped Akshaya Purreswarar in the temple.  This star is eighth in the list of 27 stars.  Hence, they are advised to pray here on the star day or on the Akshaya Tthritiya day falling in the month of April-May for gaining all prosperity and health in life.  They should also perform abishek to Sani Bhagwan with eight items as mentioned above (prayer commitment) and circumambulate the shrine eight times for lasting solutions for their problems. Even if the impact of Sani aspect would be severe, this prayer would help reduce the intensity of adverse look of the planet.

Vilankulam Saneeswara is sought by those facing debt burdens, distressed, frequent health problems, the handicapped and facing obstacles in marriage proposals.  He is gracing in the temple with His consorts Jeshta and Mandha in wedding form in the name of Aadhibruhat Saneeswara.  He is all merciful in the temple.  Mother Abhivruddhi Nayaki (mother granting all progress in life) ensures all development in life.   There is no Navagraha shrine (shrine for 9 planets together) in the temple. Instead, Sani Baghwan and His Father Sun grace from their respective shrines. Lord Vinayaka graces facing west.   As He ensures success (Vijaya) to His devotees, He is praised as Vijaya Vinayaka.

Mahasivarathri in February-March, Tirukarthikai in November-December and Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

Sthalapuranam:

Devas surrendered to Lord Shiva in Tiruvadhirai zone.  This is one of the zones where Lord Shiva walks in during Pradosha days (13th day either from new moon or full moon days) and on Tiruvadhirai star days.  During His stay in this zone, Lord would not let down His devotees.  Hence, He is praised as Abhaya Varada Easwarar – protecting those surrendering to Him.  The starrers are advised to scrupulously use this day in their own interest. Great Rishis Bhairava and Raivada had worshipped the Lord in this temple. Raivadha means the light emanating from the three eyes of Lord Shiva.  The Rishi was born by the power of this light on a Tiruvadhirai day.

This is the temple for the worship of those afflicted with the adverse aspects of planets Rahu and Ketu – dragon’s tail and head – and those belonging to Tiruvadhirai star.  The land has the power of Trinetra – three eyes of Lord Shiva gracing in the temple as Abhaya Varadeeswara.  Mother Sundaranayaki is also called Kadal Partha Nayaki meaning She is facing the sea.  The temple is adopted in the Thevaram hymns of Sundarar and Gnanasambandar.  Next to Tirukadayur for relief from death fear and longevity, this is the second temple devotees pray for the purpose.  Special rituals as Mrutyanja Home and Ayush Homa for longevity are performed by many in this temple after Tirukadayur.

The marriage of Tiruvadirai girls stalled by any dosha would be settled to the satisfaction of both sides if prayer is submitted to the Lord in this temple. King Adhiveerarama Pandian belonging to Tiruvadhirai was a devotee of Lord Abhaya Varadeeswarar and carried out many renovations in the temple.  In early days, the place was known as Tiru Adhirai Pattinam (after the name of the star), changed as Adhi Veera Raman Pattinam (after the name of the king) and came to stay now as Athirampattinam. People suffering from incurable diseases, those afraid of death and seeking longevity pray here besides Tiruvadhirai starrers seeking relief from any planetary adversities.  People perform Mrutunjaya Homa (a ritual to conquer Yama the God of Death) and Ayush Home for longevity.  Any obstacle in the way of marriage talks would surely disappear if the parties concerned sincerely pray in this temple.

Panguni Uthiram is the important festival in the temple in the month of March-April. Other festivals are Tirukarthikai in November-December, Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November, Maha Shivrathri in February-March and Arudra Abishek in December-January.

Mother Sundaranayaki is also praised as ‘Kadal Partha Nayaki’ meaning that the Goddess is facing the sea. The temple is praised in the hymns of Saint Tirugnanasambandar. It is believed that Siddhas are praying in this temple invisibly.

Sthalapuranam:

The moolavar of this divya desam is Pandava Thoodha perumal. Here emperuman is 28 feet tall and is in Irundha thirukolam (sitting posture). Emperuman is flanked byThaayaars Rukmani and Sathyabama in the sanctum sanctorum. As the taayaars are present by emperumans side, there is no separate sannidhi for taayaar. The designs on the moolavars garments are truly intricate and also fantastic. The deity is not of stone but of stucco and the design of the garment is part of the idol, so there is no need for any Vastharam for the Perumal.

Once Sri Krishnar went to Duriyodhanan as Thoodhuvan – Diplomat (a person who is sent to compramise and to avoid the war). Sri Krishnar went to Hasthinapuram to compramise on war. But, Duriyodhanan wanted to kill Sri Krishnar which is said to be against the Dharman.

So, he dug a big pit under the chair where Sri Krishnar was made to sit. Inside the pit, lots of his soldiers were placed to kill Sri Krishnar. It is Sriman Narayanan who looks at the action performed by after each and every Jeevathamas. So, he clearlt understood the plan of Duriyodhanan. But, opposite to it, Sri Krishnar gave them his Vishwaroopa Dharshan to all.

After hearing all this, Janameyjayan wanted to get the Vishwaroopa Dharshan of Sriman Narayanan as He gave the seva for all in the Duriyodhan’s palace. So, he started to do the Ashwametha yagam. And at tha end of the yagam, Sriman Narayanan gave his seva in Vishwaroopa Dharsanam as “Pandava thoothan”.

Sthalapuranam:

It is believed that Kruthika starrers will have a problem-free life if they visit and worship in this temple on the star days and light lamps on the Pradosham day (13th day either from new moon or full moon days).  Women of this star awaiting marriage are advised to perform abishek to Mother with water fetched from holy rivers and perform Sumangali Pujas, so that the event will take place soon. As in the hands of Sri Meenakshi in Madurai, Mother Tungabalasthanambikai also holds a parrot called Vedamirt Keeram.  Mother has Neelothpal flower, discus and conch in other hands.  It is believed that Lord Shiva Himself is in the form of parrot on the left shoulder of Mother.  It chants Vedas. Baghwan Veda Vyasa and Sukabrahmma Rishi are believed to have worshipped Mother in this temple.  For a happy married life, women of Kruthika star are advised to have the darshan of this parrot on Fridays or on the star days.  There is a shrine for Lord Sattanadha above the vimana of the sanctorum.  Special pujas are performed here on Friday nights.

Due to Unbearable atrocities of the demons Padmasura, Singamukha and others, the sages appealed to Mother Parvathi for protection.  Mother prayed to Lord Shiva who was in Katrajyothi (light in fire form) yoga.  Interrupted by the prayer of Mother Parvathi, Katra Sundareswarar (Karthika Sundareswarar) opened His eyes from where came out six sparks.  They united together and became Karthikeya. The place has the reputation of giving birth to Lord Muruga.  A golden light – Kanchana prakasa appeared from the Lord, thus naming the place as Kanchana Nagar.  The name had many changes during the time that followed and presently it is Kanja Nagar meaning Golden town.  Karthika Sundareswarar means the deity producing six sparks.  Thus the shrine is attributed to Kruthika star.

Lord Shiva graces as a swayambumurthy in the temple facing west considered a significant in the temple. Of the 63 Saivite Nayanmars, Manakkanjarar was born in this place. It is also believed that Kruthika maidens taking care of Lord Muruga in His childhood were born here.

Ambal: Periyanayaki

Sthala Theertham:

Sthala Virksham:

Star : Ashwini

Male:

Although you are independent and will achieve success through your own efforts, you may receive assistance from others. Opposition from relatives should be anticipated. Your personality combines religious inclination together with good memory, knowledge and wisdom. A variety of problems may occur in your life. Though you are financially cautious, you may miscalculate the amount of your savings. Your decisions are carefully considered but once you have established your position you remain inflexible, even at the request of those closest you. You are fond of neatness and cleanliness, even in your interactions with the outside world. You have a powerful sense of responsibility. Except for trivial irritations, life with your wife be exceedingly happy. You will enjoy the company of your children. You are strong-willed and enjoy a good conversation. You are considered lucky. You have a deep concern for people. You have excellent administrative skills. Since your tolerance is low, you invite unnecessary worries early in life. Use caution to prevent urinary and heart ailments before they become serious.

Female:

You will be intelligent, strong and beautiful women, beloved by all. You possess genuine concern for others; but despite your good qualities you will find reasons to doubt yourself, both as a young girl and as a woman. You are attracted to good cloths and expensive trinkets. Your gentle charm and pleasant behavior will serve to attract many men. Even your face will reflect your calm and your feminine dignity. However, you are strong willed and will not permit yourself to be talked out of a decision you have made. Fortunately you are not fanatical in your beliefs. You are generally particular about the neatness of your environment, both at work and at home. When you feel that you are committed to a relationship, you will give your partner the best of yourself. You tend to have a little wonder-lust in your heart, and for the sake of your romantic relationship, you must sometimes quell your instincts and adapt to some domesticity. Avoid alcohol and other stimulants. Also, remember that exaggerations are lies by a different name and may be thought of as such by the people you hold most dear. Your husband will be quite good-looking.

Sthalapuranam:

Sages of Tharukavana came to an arrogant conclusion that Lord Shiva gains power only through the Yagnas performed by them. Lord Shiva, to teach them a lesson, came to their place in the guise of a young beggar but in His alluring best. Their wives could not control their exciting comments on His handsomeness and followed him madly without noticing their dresses loosening. Meantime, Lord Vishnu too appeared before the sages as an enchanting angel whose beauty was beyond the power of words. They followed this woman as madly as their wives did after the young beggar.

Soon the Rishis realized that they had been fooled and became angry and wanted to revenge the Lord for the humiliation meted out to them. They created a ferocious elephant through a Yagna to kill Lord Shiva. Contrary to their expectations, the animal was killed by the Lord using its skin as a blanket to cover His body. Hence, the Lord came to be praised as Gajasamharamurthy. The sages shed their pride and surrendered to Lord.

Another legend goes along, Jallika, though belonged to the demon community, and was a staunch Shiva devotee. She was good in nature.  Her husband Virupakshan was all cruel and preferred human flesh for his food.  A young boy was proceeding to Ganga to perform shrarda (an annual ritual performed in memory of departed parents by sons). When Virupaksha rushed to devour the boy, Jallika prevented him saying that killing and eating Brahmins would turn into a poison and kill him in turn.  The demon husband pushed her aside and devoured the Brahmin boy and died instantaneously. Jallika rushed to Lord Shiva in Tiruthuraipoondi and cried saying that her husband was truly wicked and begged the Lord to give him back to her as she could not live without him. She also prayed that the Lord created only wise and noble souls and not fleshes seeking demons.  Moved by her prayers, Mother Periyanayaki appeared before her and restored both the Brahmin boy and her demon husband to life.  The boy asked the Mother what prompted her to restore his life though his fate was otherwise, Mother said that her grace would always rain on those who respectfully perform shrardha to ancestors and that she would grant the souls total salvation and place them in Heaven.  She told Jallika that she would not let any woman deprived of her Mangalsutra wishing the welfare of the husband however wicked he was and promised to correct him.

Lord Shiva graces facing west, a tradition that is different from general system. That Lord Shiva is a Gajasamhara Murthy, is an added importance and reputation of the temple. Lord destroys meaningless fear in the minds of his devotees. He also destroys arrogance and pride humans

Ashwini deities and deities attributed to medical powers pray in this temple every day. A wealthy life means a healthy life. According to our philosophies, birth by itself is an illness. Piravi (birth) Marundeeswarar helps devotees from the cycle of births and deaths and offers total salvation to Jeevatmas. Those born on Ashwini star naturally have the power of resistance from illnesses. In order to sustain that gift, they are advised to visit this temple and perform Dhanvantri Homa and Saneeswara Homa and worship planet Mars-Angaraka

Chithirai festival in April-May is grandly celebrated in the temple followed by Navarathri in September-October and Tiruvadhirai in December-January.
