Sri Vedapureeswarar temple

Period of origin

Before 2000 years

Name of deity

Moolavar: Vedapureeswarar, Vazhai Madu Nathar

Ambal: Mangayarkarasi

Sthala Theertham: Vaidha theertham

Sthala Virksham: Vilwa

Devaram: Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar

Sthalapuranam:

The temple has a 3 tier Rajagopuram, one prakara with Listening Vinayaka (Sevi Saitha Vinayaka). 108 Shivalinga, Lords Subramania, Dakshinamurthy, Arthanareeswara, Nataraja, Mothers Durga and Mahalakshmi and Sapthasthana Linga shrines are in the inner prakara.
There are also epigraphic evidences about the history of the temple belonging to Rajakesari Varman and Koparakesari Varman period.  The name of the Lord is shown as Tiruvedhikudi Mahadevar, Parakesari Chaturvedi Mangala Mahadevar.  As Lord appeared from the plantain (Vazhai) field, He is also praised as Vazhaimadu Nathar.  Pallava kings too had done renovations to the temple

Saint Tirugnanasambandar had sung the glory of Lord in all his hymns.  In his pathigam (10 verses) worshipping the Lord of the temple, in the seventh verse, he mentions His mercy on those aspiring an auspicious wedding.Generally, the Arthanareeswara form of Lord Shiva has Shakti on the left.  But with a view to give importance to womanhood, Lord is on the left and Mother on the right in the Arthanareeswara form in this Tiruvedhikudi temple.
As Lord Brahmma (Vedhi) worshipped Lord Shiva here, the place is named Tiruvedhikudi.  Those worshipping Lord Vedapureeswarar will become scholars in Vedas.  The four Vedas – Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva – had worshipped Lord in this temple.  Lord Vinayaka, enjoying the sound of the Vedas, listened to the recitation by leaning His ears with all attention.  He thus assumed the name Veda Pillayar.  As many scholars well versed in Vedas live here, the place was also once known as Chaturvedi Mangalam. Sun God, Indira, Sage Vyasa and Lord Vishnu had worshipped Shiva in this temple.  Surya Puja is performed in the temple on 13, 14 and 15th of Panguni month to Sun God in March-April.

A Chola king was much worried because of the delay in the marriage of his daughter.  He came to this temple, worshipped Mother Mangayarkarasi seeking the wedding boon for his daughter.  The wedding took place shortly.  Since the day, he changed the name of his daughter as Mangayarkarasi as a token of his gratitude to Mother.  He also did many renovations to the temple.

This is the fourth sacred Shiva sthalas among the seven where Lord Aiyarappar of Thiruvaiyaru pays His visit during the Chithirai month covering April-May.

Sthala Theertham: Nandi Theertham, Kudamurutti, Daksa Theertham, Brahma Theertham

Sthala Virksham: Vilvam

Sthalapuranam:

To pluck the head of Brahman, the Lord assumed the garb of a hunter.  A small statue of this form is seen near the left side of the door that leads to the sanctum of Brahman opposite to the Lord’s sanctum.  In the sanctum of Navagraha, a dais is built with provision to light lamps and worship.

Since one head, out of the five heads of Brahman was plucked this place came to be known as ‘Kandanapuram’ or ‘Kandiyur’.  The Lord brought the Bael Tree fromMount Kailas for Sage Saathaathaapar; so this holy place is also called  “ Aadi Vilvaaranyam”. Sage Saathaathaapar used to go to Kaalahasti on the ‘pradosham’ day to have darshan of the Lord.  Once when he came to Kandiyur, he could not go to Kalahasti in time.  The legend is that the Lord graced him with the Kalahasti darshan at Kandiyur itself.  This sacred site is also the place to placate the Brahmahathi curse.

The sanctum of Dandapaani is a separate temple with a mandapam.  In the ‘saptha-sthaana’ festival, the Lord takes a procession.  Ambal stands south facing with four arms and with ‘abhayavaratham’ (refuge sign).  Within are the sanctum of Vinayagar, Subrahmanya with Valli-Deivanai, Mahalakshmi, Nataraja, Vishnu-Durgai, Bhairavar, many kinds of Vinayagar and Ardhanaareeswarar in the sitting posture. Chandeswarar is in separate temple.  Brahman, Lingodhbavar, Dakshinamaurthi, and Bhikshaadanar appear as koshta murthis.

Near the door-guards (dwaarapaalar), is the image of Sage Saathaathaapar, and the sanctum of Kaalathinaathar, who revealed Himself to Sage Saathaathaapar, Sapthasthaana Lingams and Panchabhuta Lingams. In the Navagrahas’ sanctum the Sungod is seen with his two spouses.  The Prime Deity a Swayambu murthi, is on a slightly high pedestal.  The statues of Brahman and Saraswathi are near the sanctum of the Lord.  The statue of seated Brahman looks lovely appearing with folded hands in prayer holding flower and rosary.  After plucking his head, Brahman prayed to the Lord to restore his beauty.  The Lord blessed him to get back the beauty of his five faces in his four countenances and Brahman gladly received this benediction.

The Rajagopuram with five stages stands majestically.  Armoured Flag-post, Nandi and altar are seen.  Lord Vinayakar is seen in the Flag-post.  In the inscription, this Lord is noted as “Thiruveerattaanaththu mahaadevar, Thirukkandiyur utaiya mahadevar”.

Moolavar: Neiyadiyappar

Sthalapuranam:

This is the place where Lord Shiva collected Ghee for Nandhi’s Marriage
This is one of the Saptha sthana Sthalam and Seventh in order.

This temple was renovated by Aditya Chola at 871-907 AD.

A cow in this region was habitually pouring its milk at a specific place. The milk impacted by Sun heat and rain changed into ghee. When a shepherd tried to check the cow, it disappeared. He could not know that it was the very divine cow Kamadenu. When people came to the spot and dug the place, they found a Shivalinga here. The news reached the King. He built a temple, performed consecration and arranged abishek with ghee each day. The ghee abishek is followed even now. Ghee means Nei in Tamil, hence the name of the Lord Neiyadi Appar. The place has another story too. A Shiva devotee had the habit of picking the palak leaves (keerai in Tamil) while returning after lighting lamps in the temple. He told Lord one day that he was lighting lamps in the temple each day and sought his mercy as he was aging. Lord replied that what mercy remains to be shown to him as he had taken the Palak leaves grown in the temple as wage for the job, according to sthala purana.

Mother Balambika, as the name suggests is ever young in appearance. This is the only temple in the hymns of Tirunavukkarasr praising Ambica for Her beauty. Lord Iyarappar visits this temple thrice a year from Tiruvaiyaru. Of the Sapthasthana (seven important temples of the district) Thillaisthanam is the seventh. During festival days, devotees can enjoy the darshan of the seven palanquin processions simultaneously in this place. Saint Sundarar had included this place in his Thevaram hymns. Arunagiriar had praised Lord Muruga of this temple in his Tirupugazh hymns. The place is praised by other poets as Pugazhendi and Ottakoothar. The sculpture of Nardana Ganapathy does need a mention. Lord Dakshinamurthy graces the devotees in a standing form. Pallavas had paid their due share for the renovation of the temple. Kings of Sri Lanka had worshipped Lord as their Kuladeiva-family deity.

Saraswathi, Nandhi Dhevar, Gowthamar, Brigumuni, Sambandhar, Appar, Pugazendhi and Ottakkuththan had worshiped the lord here.

Here Lord Shiva daily gets Ghee anointing(Abishekam)after that he gets a warm water anointing.
Saptha Sthana Thiruvizha at the month of April – May and Brahmotsavam in the month of January – February. At that time Ghee rice and curd rice are distributed.

As we entered through East facing Rajagopuram, the first broad corridor welcomes us with Ambal Shrine. Lord Vignesh and Lord Murugan Shrine are Seen at inside prahar. In Koshtam Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Dwara ganapathi as Narthana Ganapathi are seen.

King KAYAVAHU of Srilanka treated this deity as an ancestral god and celebrated festivals are known through stone inscriptions available at this temple.
