Thirunallar – Sri Dharbaranyeswara Temple

Name of the Temple

Sri Dharbaranyeswara Temple

Period of Origin

Before 7th Century

Name of Deity

Moolavar: Dharbaranyeswara

Ambal: Pranambika

SthalaTheertham: Nala Theertham

Sthalavriksham: Kusa Grass (Dharbai)

Dhevaram: Gnanasambandhar, Appar, Sundarar.

Sthalapuranam:

Though Saneeswaran here is very famous, the presiding deity is Dharbaranyeswarar. His Consort is Bogamartha Poon Mulayal or Praanaambikai. The lingam here is a self manifested Lingam or Swayambhu. The Sthala vruksham is Dharba or grass. This place was a forest of Dharba.  Dharba is a type of grass and aranyam means forest and hence the name Dharbaranyeswaraswamy or Dharbaranyeswarar for the Lord. Even today you can see the impression of grass on the lingam here. Thirunallar is one of the “Saptha Vidanga Sthalam”. The idols in these temples depict Lord Shiva performing one of His seven dance forms. It is believed that Lord Shiva imparted the knowledge of the Vedas & Shastras to Brahma here.  People pray to Swarna Ganapathy here to overcome financial problems.

Lord Surya was married to Usha or Light. Usha Devi was unable to bear the heat radiated from Surya and left her shadow or Chaya with Suryan while she herself stayed away. Saneeswaran is the son of Chaya Devi and Suryan. The very sigh tof Saneeswaran is dreaded and believed to be destructive. Suryan’s chariot is believed to have been destroyed when Saneeswaran as a baby first opened his eyes and looked at Suryan. Saneeswaran after intense penance on Lord Shiva attained the status of a celestial planet.

It is believed that Saneeswaran became lame when he was kicked by Lord Yama (Sani’s step brother – son of Surya & Usha) in a fit of anger. It is because of this that he is a slow moving planet, taking approximately two and a half years to move from one Zodiac Sign to another. Such a transit known as Sani peyarchi is very important and devotees from all over throng the temple to offer their prayers. Saneeswaran is believed to have a major influence on the course of ones life and also the most feared planet. The unique aspect here is that Saneeswaran is in standing posture with abhayahastha ie hand bestowing blessing.

Everyone experiences sade sati or ezharai sani in their life time. It occurs 2 to 3 three times in a life span as it recurs after approximately 30 years. Even the Lord himself is not exempt from the effect of ezharai sani. Once, Shiva hid himself in a remote cave to meditate and escape the effect of Sani. On his return he was informed by Sani that the Lord had went into hiding in the first place because of the influence of ezharai Sani. An astonished but pleased Shiva, declared to him to be Saneeswaran.  No other planet has the tag eswaran to the name.

There is a saying in Tamil “Saniyaipol Koduppavanum illai, saniyaipol keduppavanum illai” which translates to “There is none like Saneeswaran who can give a good life or ruin a life”. Actually, even at the worst of times Saneeswaran only delays but never denies.  The experience of going through the ezharai sani makes one mentally very strong.   He does not test us more than we can handle.  He affects a person based on his past deeds.  He is supposed to be Just. Interestingly, the two sons of Suryan, judge us and give us the palan or results based on our karma or deeds.  Saneeswaran does this during our lifetime and Yama does that after ones death.

According to a Legend, King Nala had not washed his feet properly while doing puja. Saneeswaran who was waiting for such an opportunity for about 12 years, immediately caught hold of him. This has probably prompted the tradition to wash our feet before entering the house. Getting back to the story of King Nala, under the influence of ezharai sani, he lost his kingdom, separated from his wife and children, had health problems and wandered around like a beggar. As per the advice of Bharadwaja muni he worshipped Dharbaranyeswarar at Thirunallar, after a dip in the holy tank here. It was then he was relieved of the effects of Sani. After this, Shiva asked Saneeswaran to be here and bless all his devotees.

Musukunda chakravarthi brought Emarald Linga from Indra and kept in this place as a Last linga among the Seven called as NAGAVIDANGAR.

Ambal: Elavarkuzhali , Umai Ammai

Sthala Theertham: Amirtha Theertham.

Stalavriksham: Erumulai

Dhevaran: Appar, Thirugnanasampanthar and Sundarar

Sthalapuranam

The temple is in the heart of the place Aalangudi. The main tower (Rajagopuram) is of five tiers constructed very aesthetically. Lord Dakshinamurthy has a significant importance in the temple. There are shrines for Kalangamal Katha Vinayaka, Muruga, Lakshmi, Nalvar (Gnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar), the authors of Thevaram and Tiruvasagam hymns) Suriyeasar, Somesar, Gurumaswarar, Somanathar, Sabtharishinathar, Vishnunathar, Brahmmesar, collectively known as Sapthalingas, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Sage Agasthya in the inner corridor (Prakara) of the temple.

There are procession deities – Big sized Vinayaka, Subramanya, Chandeswara, and Kalyanasastha. The Tirumurai temple is in the Sabanathar shrine. Procession deity Dakshinamurthy graces with four Sanakathi rishis. The Balipeeta (a stage or platform) for Nandhi the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva is covered by copper plates. Dwarapalakas (securitiy) Special abishek and pujas are conducted in the Abathsahayeswarar temple for Guru Dakshinamurthy of Thursday in the month of Masi –February-March. Married women change their Mangalsutra thread. Women with auspicious Guru-Jupiter aspects are lucky ones with long married life. Masi Thursday is considered very important for Guru worship. This day has greater significance in Jupiter-Guru related issues than his transit days from one zodiac sign to the next each year.

As there is no direct Jupiter shrine here, Lord Dakshminamurthy, the authority for the planet is worshipped very devotionally here. Dakshinamurthy graces here with four Sanakathi rishis. Sage Viswamitra worshipped here. Alangudian:Aalam in Tamil and Sanskrit means poison of highest intensity which would burn the whole world which sprang up first while churning the milk ocean. When the whole world – earth, pathala the world below and the one above the earth – was trembling with fear of total destruction, Lord Shiva came forward and consumed it to protect the universe. Lord Shiva drank the Aalam, hence the name Aalangudian. Tamil Poet Kalamega known for his witty expressions says, “Who said that Aalangudian would not drink (Kudi) the Aalam. If he did not, all in the world would have perished.” .The reputation of the place is also due to the fact that none is affected by any poison problem in this place. As the holy tree is the black poolai plant, the place is named Tiruirumpoolai and also as Alangudi as the Lord protected the world by consuming the Alam poison while churning the milk ocean.

Alangudi is regarded as one of the Pancha Aranya Sthalas – Pancha-five, Aranya-forest covered). Of the various subsidiary temples attributed to Tiruvidaimarudur Lord Mahalainga Peruman, Alangudi is one. Those worshipping in this temple on Thursdays are blessed with all welfare in life. Those afflicted by snake planet aspects get relief here. This is the only temple where Lord Dakshinamurthy is taken in car procession. There is also a statue of Daksha, father of Mother Parvathi, with a goat head.

Sundarar: The idol is small and appears a little damaged. This was taken to Tiruvarur once by a king. However, the idol has been brought back to Alangudi by a priest. To escape the constables on the way, the priest told them that he was taking his child suffering from measles. Surprisingly, when the priest unfolded the idol after reaching the Alangudi temple, he found small-pox scars on the statue too which are visible even now.

Sukravara Ambica: Firday (Sukravar) is attributed to the worship of Mother-Goddess. Bearing the same name, Sukravara Ambica graces from a separate shrine. The other significance of the temple is that the structure reminds one the Matha (Mother) Pitha (Father) and Guru (Teacher) philosophy. Entering the temple, we meet Mother-Ambica Shrine first, followed by the presiding deity and the Guru-Dakshinamurthy.

Presiding deity Aabathsahayeswarar is a Swayambulinga Murthy in the temple. Lord Dakshinamurthy adored as Guru Baghwan (teacher of Dharma and Yoga sastras) has special importance in the temple and therefore, the place is regarded as Dakshinamurthy Sthala – the holy place. Sage Viswamitra, emperor Mushukunda and Veerabadra had woshipped in this place. Mother Parvathi performed penance here to have Shiva as Her Lord. Scars of measles are found in the idol of Saint Sudarar.

Transit day of planet Jupiter from one zodiac sign to the next with special pujas, Poornima day (Full moon day) in the month of Chithirai (April-May), Thai poosam in January-February, Panguni Uthiram in March-April and Car festival for Lord Dakshinamurthy are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

When the priest returned home after number of years, he saw two women in the house one sick and the other a healthy, resembling his wife. He immediately assumed that the healthy one was his wife. Lord Shiva realised the mistake of his devotee, and appeared in front of the priest, informed him about his wife’s illness, and explained that the healthy one was his sister-in-law, not his wife.

Thirukarugavur

Name of the Temple

Arulmigu Mullaivananathar Alayam

Period of origin

Before 6 th century.

Name of deity

Moolavar: Mullaivananathar

Ambal:Garbarakshambikai

Sthala Theertham: Brahma Theertham

Stalavriksham: Mullaikodi (jasmine)

Dhevaram: Appar, Thirugnanasampanthar and Sundarar

Sthalapuranam:

One of the Pancha Aranya Sthalam known to be “MULLAIVANAM” the first in order.Ushakala (Pooja performed in the Morning) is very famous in this sthalam.

There was a Rishi named Niruthuvar lived with his wife Vathigai in this place. One day the muni went to see Varunan leaving his pregnant wife in the ashram, at that time a saintOorthuvapatharcame there. she was unable to move fast and give food to that saint because of her labour time. He got angry and cursed her. she got sad and came here worshiped Goddess. Parvathi took the avatar of Karukatha Nayagi (Garbarakshambigai) and appeared before Vethigai and protected the womb by holding it in a “kalasam” (divine pot). The goddess has protected the fetus and blessed to grow in a divine pot until its maturity. Hence the Goddess came to be known as Garbarakshambiga (Garba = womb Raksha = protect). Here we have to remember about the test tube baby, this is happened thousands of years before in our holy country India.

Here lingam is Suyambu. This place was covered with full of jasmine plant and we can see the marking in the body of linga, hence Lord Shiva is called as Mullaivananathar.

Brahma, Karkiyar muni, Gowthamar and Chandran had worshiped the Lord here.

Here Ambal Garbarakshambikai has a separate shrine with a prahar and mandap. It is said that the couples who are not blessed with a child for many years will be blessed by ambal if they perform the parikar of smearing ghee on the steps. They have to consume the ghee that was offered to ambal for 48 days. This is not a belief but a truth which is happening now. Once the couple is blessed with the child they have to bring the child to the temple and place the baby in the golden cradle available here and go around the prahar.

Here anointing (Abisekam) is not performed to lingam because the ligam is suyambu (Ants mud) and it is believed that it is protected for all these thousands of years by applying“punugu sattam”. There is a belief that incurable diseases will be cured if we offer punugu sattam to the lord.

West faced Rajagopurm welcomes us with five stages. and a separate entrance at south, Nandhavanam, Vasantha mandap are situated in first prahar.

Inside the premises Murugan, Vinayagar(suyambu) , Nanthi(suyambu), 63 Nayanmars, two Balipedam, Dakshinamoorthy, Gajalakshmi and a lingam worshiped by Niruthuvar Rishi are seen.
